Leah Steelgrave

Posted October 15, 2018

Leah Steelgrave stepped inside and closed the door behind her, this was not going to be pleasant. "Father, I'm home." She called out. Almost dreading how her father would react to the news that the hotel had sold.

Elias walked into the living room where Leah waited. "And how did your meeting with Conners go?"

"Not well father. Old man Conners no longer owns the hotel. It seems a Mister Wentworth now owns it." She answered, then added, "I don't like him. I can't say why exactly, but there's something about him, something, I don't know."

Elias, put his hands behind his back and paced for a moment, then turned to her. "Well, this certainly slows down my plans, but not entirely." He explained. "The hotel was a nice start, but not critical." He paused as if formulating either a plan or an answer. "I'll have to have this looked into further and examine my other options in Kalispell. Anything else?"

"No, not really, but I did see one of Case's men in town. It seemed odd. He was just lounging against an awning post as if he was waiting for someone." Was her reply.

"You never know with your brother," Elias observed, he'd need to send someone to Whitefish to see what his son was up to.

Things were not going his way, not at all, but then things didn't always go just how he wanted. There were other ways to ensure the outcome was favorable to him, many other ways. He had the men to get what he wanted done, that was for sure. They were good at what they did and he could count on them. Yet, for the moment, it was not about what his men could do, it was what he, Elias Steelegrave wanted to do.

The first thought was to burn him out, but that would garner him nothing but a pile of ashes and an expensive rebuild. Out of the question. Of course, he could always have him killed, yet for the time being that appeared to be risky, too risky just yet. He needed information on this Wentworth character before he moved on him. He turned to his daughter, "Do you think you might be able to worm your way in and find out about this Wentworth fellow?"

Leah looked back at her father, it was not the first time he had asked her to use her feminine charms to pry information from male opponents, and generally, if they were handsome enough, or well to do enough she was happy to go along. This one? Not so much, there was something in his manner, something about his eyes that backed her away from the idea.

“You need to find out more about him father.” She replied. “I don’t like him. I don’t believe he’s who or what he says he is.”

"And what brings you to that conclusion, Leah?" He asked, peaked by her distrust of this fellow. She had a keen sense about people, and those she distrusted or disliked had a habit of being problematic for the Evergreen Ranch, or the interests of the Steelegraves.

"I don't know father, I just don't like what I felt in his presence. This man means trouble....somehow." Was Leah's response. "He was, I don't know how to put this, just not, not genuine? Maybe that's not it, but the way he said that you would have to deal with him, made my blood run cold." She explained as well as she could. Matthew Wentworth, if that was his name, represented something ominous for her, something bad.

Taking her fears seriously he said; "I'll look into this man immediately. I'll need to go to Whitefish and wire my contacts in the east. We'll see if anything useful turns up."
