With a smile, Addy nodded. "There's plenty'a good folk in this town. May not be th' biggest, nor th' most citified place, but Kallispell's a right nice place ta live." She knew that even if something happened to keep her from caring for the boy, there were plenty of people who would make sure he had what he needed. And it only helped that Weedy was polite and well-mannered, more than eager to help, seeking the attention that he hadn't gotten from his mother.

"He seems excited, been talkin' 'bout havin' his own room." Addy shrugged. "If it don't set well with him some nights, he can sleep in th' barn. I know he spent plenty'a nights by himself when he was little, but I'm hopin' he'll be happy fer somethin' more normal." She grinned. "I even promised him I'd learn ta read."

“Opponents, that’s one way of putting it.” Then, she chuckled, as ladylike as she could. “I wonder how this will all end. I don’t see a happy family reunification afterward. Far from it.” She said as quietly as possible.

"I think you knew that when you started this," Jonah commented softly, giving her arm a squeeze, "and I cannot see you lowering your standards and giving up your morals." Sadly, Miss Leah would likely never have congenial relations with her family again.

“With Mom gone, now the boys pretty much scattered, except for Case, coming together again seems to be an impossibility. It is true, as a family we were never really close, and the recent events have just driven a wedge deeper between us all.”

"I'm sorry, Leah." Fortunately, Jonah had never had problems with family, he'd not really known his father, and he and his mother had long been estranged...he didn't even know if the woman was still alive, and frankly didn't care. "You have to take care if yourself."

Then she stopped. “I’m sorry. We‘re here to have fun, maybe talk a little hospital, but we’re wasting time with this drivel!”

"It's hardly drivel," he commented, glad that she was able to talk to him...it was never good not to have someone to just listen to you, and Jonah was more than willing to do that for her. "So, tell me," he changed the subject, "what play do you think a local company should do? Something tragic? Or perhaps a comedy?"

She paused a moment, then looked up at Jonah, “Of course you are right, I knew what would happen when I began this.” She admitted with a devilish grin. “It was my fathers money that had has funded every step so far, done in a manner he would not know where it went, or when. I have some clever contacts with like feelings toward Elias Steelgrave."

"As for the danger involved, they forget how each of the men in my family took part in teaching me to shoot.” Again she smiled, “If that’s what it comes to. So yes Jonah, a comedy would so fit the situation here, if we can actually gain some interest without detracting from the hospital and orphanage problems at hand.”

“Now there you go, Addy, nothing wrong in learning to read, fact is there are a lot of things knowing your letters will make better for you, and Weedy.” Speed assured her. “You’ll be able to read the Union for one, and books, there are a lot of great books available, even out here.”

“That the boy is excited about a room all to himself is great, and the fact you’d allow him the freedom to sleep in the barn, well, that should work out just fine for both of you. But I’ve a hunch once he sets up his room to his liking I doubt he’ll want to be spending much, if any, time in the barn.”

Clara took in a breath with trepidation once it was out in the open the two cowpokes worked for rival ranches, and more than rivals, the two owning families hated each other. Of course these two just held jobs there, not quite the same personal investment. But her worry was for naught it seemed. They actually shook hands and said nice things! Alright, so a surprise but a pleasant one.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Charlie Wentworth. I work at Lost Lake."

"Considering that it's our bosses who are at loggerheads with each other and not us, I think we should get along fine. Besides, if I got into a fight with someone from Evergreen, my older brother, who is foreman would have me cleaning out the stables for the next month and that's something I don't want to be doing in warmer weather."

"On the other hand those of us who own our own farm have to do such tasks daily regardless of weather," Clara sagely pointed out.

"And do all the cooking and the laundry, keep the house clean, and not get wages to do it all. So I do not think you gents have it so hard," she added.

"But she's dancing with them," Weedy pointed out, "more than one...and she got all dressed up."

"Right enough but she told Pa she didn't wanna go just the other day. And that ain't her dress, I'm sure of that. She don't have nothin' that nice," countered Wyatt.

"If she gets married, though, won't she go live with her husband?" the other boy had a good question there!

"Umm, yeah I suppose so. Hadn't thought about that. Hope not though, she does all the cookin' and she's good at it too. And washes the clothes. All that stuff. Now that I think about it. Hmmm.." Wyatt paused, deep in thought.

"I reckon Pa will have to hire a maid or something?" was the best he could come up with.

"Mister Ryker." Smiling, Emeline nodded. "We met in Whitefish, you helped us free an elderly lady who was trapped in the hotel." Certainly, he recalled that!

Bridget pulled her trademark open-mouthed-with-amazement-and-delight face and looked at Jay admiringly. Leg fixer AND old lady saver! Was there nothing that this fantastic man could not do?!

"I'm glad to see you are still around town. I own the Lickskillet Cafe, please, come by whenever you like, no charge...you deserve it for helping us when you had good cause not to."

Free food? Maybe she could go with him and mooch a little slice of pie herself. She ate well at home, but always had room for more. Mr. Crabbe said she had ‘holler legs’. All of a sudden, Jay was addressing her, his little repair job.

"So you've been well and even made it to a dance. I'm glad I could be of service." Jay offered Bridget a smile, then took a cookie.

"Have you tried that leg out on the dance floor?"

She pressed in close to him so that she could whisper in his ear “Yes please”. Bridget had misconstrued the question as a request. He was only really encumbered by the half-eaten cookie he was holding, so she helpfully relieved him of it, and shoved it in her mouth, and took him by his now free hand as the music for a Square Dance started up.

“What about you, Mr. Pike?” Emeline took Barnabas’ hand, shall we join them?”

Bridget smiled excitedly at the prospect of all four of them going out onto the floor together.

A maid? That would be interesting, although Weedy supposed there was no telling if a maid could cook, or do as good a job at cleaning and all.

"Do you want her to have to do?" Weedy glanced at Wyatt, wanting to help his friend. "Maybe there's something we can do to stop them? I mean, make her seem like not a good person to marry?" He wasn't sure exactly how to accomplish that, but maybe if they talked to the boys and had stories or something about how hard it was to live with Clara, they'd want to leave her alone, so she could stay with Wyatt's dad and Wyatt could be a sailor or something?

“What about you, Mr. Pike?” Emeline took Barnabas’ hand, shall we join them?”

“It’s what we come for, Em. Let’s get to it!” He said smiling as he took her hand and started for the dance floor. Standing about gabbing was all fine an dandy, but this was a dance, and dancing was what they’d come to do.

Bridget smiled excitedly at the prospect of all four of them going out onto the floor together.

Brendan smiled a non-committal smile as Arabella invited him to church. There was no way she was gonna get him in a church, not even by promising how good her harmonium playing was. But he didn't have time to think a lot about church because he was talking with Charlie now. The other man had introduced himself and didn't seem in the mood for a fight.

He smirked at that last bit. What a way protect yourself - name-drop your older brother who was the foreman at the other ranch. But he would play along, since he didn't really want to get into a fight at the dance either. Certainly not with the man whose company Clara seemed to enjoy so much. (Suddenly he did want to pick at Charlie just a little bit.) But he knew it would only snowball once the other hands from Evergreen and Lost Lake got wind of it, so he went with his original plan to play along with Charlie.

"I think it's more than just the bosses," he said, sticking his thumbs behind his suspenders, "but I got no quarrel with you. Yet," he added with a grin, having no intention of finding a reason to quarrel with the other man.

"On the other hand those of us who own our own farm have to do such tasks daily regardless of weather. And do all the cooking and the laundry, keep the house clean, and not get wages to do it all. So I do not think you gents have it so hard."

There Clara went being all high and mighty. The side of Brendan's mouth twitched and the teasing words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. "Yeah? Well, seems to me like your problem is owning a farm." He was teasing, but Clara's attitude annoyed him, and he was influenced by being around the rest of the Evergreen hands, who were of the opinion that the Redmonds needed to skedaddle.

He didn't say anything about all the other things Clara had mentioned. It seemed unnecessary to point out that all the things she'd mentioned besides cleaning out the stables were women's jobs. He stretched out his suspenders a little bit and glanced back at Bridget, who seemed to be occupied.

"How 'bout this next dance, Miss Redmond?" He took a leaf from Charlie's book and tried to mimic the bow he had seen the other man make, but not being practiced, he just looked a little bit like he had a sudden pain in his stomach. He straightened and flashed her one of his women-charming smiles.
