Posted October 31, 2020 | Leah Steelgrave | Present: Marshal Guyer

Leah sat at the only table in the small house she purchased after renting it for most of the winter months. It was comfortable for her, just enough, as she found out. Most of her things were stored for the time being until she decided what it was she was going to do going forward.

Going forward, that would be after the business with the hospital and orphanage was completed, which she believed would be soon. However, at the moment that seem far off in the future. First, the fight before her with the Town Council. The Right of Way deeds had been presented to Judge Ben Robertson with Marshal Speed Guyer as an unintentional witness. So far, that had proven to be a huge miscalculation on her part.

Now there was a battle for bragging rights as to who actually procured the Right of Way deeds. It was, she thought, small minded, crass, and deceitful. She had gifted the town with those deeds, not for accolades, but for trade consideration for the land that would be needed. And, she found herself up against the likes of Pastor Gideon Evans, proprietor Daniel Wilson, and Charles Wentworth Senior the new Bank owner and President, just to name a few. And then, there was her father.

As all this crept into her thinking she set he writing aside, it would take everything she had to combat the men she was up against. Somehow, this noble venture had turned ugly, at least for her, when there came a knock on the door, it wouldn’t be Jonah, she knew he had ventured to the dance, so she went to the door and opened it. Removing his hat, there stood Marshal Guyer.

“Miss Steelgrave.” He said.

Posted October 31, 2020 | Jay | Present: Addy

Jay escorted her and admired her shape in a dress. "Not a site I'm used to, I could get used to it, though. Very pretty." He complimented her again and then made sure they both got a drink.

Jay handed her one glass and held up the other. "Cheers."

He then looked around at the people talking, mingling, dancing and even making music. It was a very nice setting and people were enjoying themselves. Secretly Finn wished he could be a little more relaxed and enjoy himself more without being worried, that someone had seen his wanted poster somewhere.

he did look different now without a bushy beard and shorter hair but he still had a very recognizable accent. How terrible would it be if he got arrested here, in front of all those good people, in front of Addy and Weedy. In that moment he felt terrible about who he was but then he decided to let it go and be here in the moment without worrying. He wanted that dance.

When the piano player started a slow waltz he asked. "Would you like to dance now?"

Posted November 1, 2020 | Wellington MacKenzie

MacKenzie's head came up as he heard the music begin to play. He was so grateful for the reason to extricate himself from the conversation he had been dragged into. A group of townsfolk had decided that he needed to hear all about their plans for how to use and deploy the fort's garrison to the best result all around the area. MacKenzie had listened and nodded politely through the ad hoc military council but was also doing his best to rein in his temper.

"I must apologize for having to attend to my duties but I had promised some dances with the lady who had come out to the fort and invited I and my men...if you will excuse me." MacKenzie gave the group a bow and set his glass of punch on a nearby table as he turned and made his way through the people thronging the barn. He scanned the attendees until he finally saw Miss Devereau talking with another man over to one side. MacKenzie strode up before the pair and smiled to them both.

"Pardon me, Sir, but I had promised to ask Miss Devereau to dance to thank her for inviting myself and my men here to this amazing party..." MacKenzie then looked over at Matilda. "Would you care to dance, mademoiselle?"

Both boys had loaded up on cookies, that's what pockets were for. As a matter of fact, Wyatt had already forgotten that only yesterday he had kept a frog in that one pocket where cookies were now stored. Pa had made him toss it back outside when he had brought it in the house to scare Clara with. Pa was probably right though, Clara wouldn't have been scared anyhow just mad.

"Do you want to go over by the band, or maybe up to the loft?" Weedy asked.

The music was starting up so Wyatt didn't want to get anywhere near close to the band, what if some girl or woman asked him to dance. Scary.

"Nah, let's check out the loft. We can watch and laugh at people from above," he grinned then started to look around for a way up.

Posted November 1, 2020 | Matilda Devereau | Present: Jonah, Col. MacKenzie

Ah, yes, that would make it much easier," Jonah chuckled, then took a sip of the punch, finding it overly sweet for his taste. "But then, you might run the risk of being trampled by other erstwhile revelers, and then I'd have to go to work!"

"Oh that would be awful, on all counts and me in my best dress," Matilda smiled as she sipped her own drink.

He gave her a slight nod, then added, "Of course, if you had a good partner to lead you through the fray..." He offered his hand.

"Why thank you, I believe I shall take you..." she started and then her eyes caught the approach of none other than the cavalry commander from the fort. Nice dress uniform too. It was true what they said, men look great in uniforms.

"Pardon me, Sir, but I had promised to ask Miss Devereau to dance to thank her for inviting myself and my men here to this amazing party..." MacKenzie then looked over at Matilda. "Would you care to dance, mademoiselle?"

My goodness, it was a good thing that Matilda was not one easily flustered because here suddenly she had two handsome fellows both asking for a dance. Unlike many problems, this one was a pleasant one to have to deal with at least.

"Why colonel, glad to see you and your army could make it then," she nodded acknowledgement and gave him a smile too.

"I have just been asked to dance by this fine specimen of manhood here though. However, I can promise you can have the next dance. I hope that is satisfactory?" she replied to Mackenzie.

"Oh and allow me to introduce Doctor Jonah Danforth, town physician," she presented the other.

"And this is Colonel MacKenzie, he is in charge of the soldier boys out at the fort. I'm sorry, colonel, but I never did get your Christian name?"

MacKenzie nodded. "That will be quite satisfactory, Miss. I did not wish to ask you for a dance until the music began. The timing is completely up to you."

"Oh and allow me to introduce Doctor Jonah Danforth, town physician," she presented the other.

MacKenzie regarded the other man and his hand swung out to offer a firm clasp, noting he seemed unlike most physician types he had met.

"And this is Colonel MacKenzie, he is in charge of the soldier boys out at the fort. I'm sorry, colonel, but I never did get your Christian name?"

MacKenzie gave a smile. "Wellington, ma'am...I am afraid my father was quite the fan of the Iron Duke and wanted to pass along something of the man to myself. I suppose I should be thrilled my name isn't Arthur or Wellesley. I would probably have had to take part in far too many fistfights growing up."

Posted November 1, 2020 | Emeline Pike | Present: Arabella

Emeline could very well have cried into her cream as well at the bittersweet memories, but then that phrase nearly made her laugh aloud as they started across the street with their burden.

"You're right, it is beautiful, I don't think there is anything quite so beautiful as love, whether it's for your husband or your child, and it's a good, happy feeling." She stopped short of saying that it was losing that love that crushed your heart and had you crying in your pillow...she didn't need to think about those things so early in life, and hopefully she would never know that pain. Bad enough she was an orphan.

"You'll know love when it comes, don't worry. But don't jump at feelings just because you are wanting love." Easy advice from an old lady! "Here, now, put the jug on the table and have your dance."

It looked like the music was getting ready to start, so they were both just in time for the first dance!

What with all the banners and festooning, it took them a minute to find the ladder on the north wall, partially hidden, but once they knew where it was they quickly scrambled up to the loft and found a comfortable spot in the hay with a good view of the floor below.

"They're going to start dancing," Weedy observed, wrinkling up his nose as he took a bite of cookie. "I'm never going to dance with a girl! Never going to get married, either. I'm going to drive stages like Miz Addy, maybe in California, so I can find gold and be rich!"

Grinning, he chomped on more cookie, then added, "Or be a lawman, like Marshal Guyer. I don't know yet."

Posted November 2, 2020 | Arabella Mudd | Present: Emeline back to the dance (no reply needed)

What with all the banners and festooning, it took them a minute to find the ladder on the north wall, partially hidden, but once they knew where it was they quickly scrambled up to the loft and found a comfortable spot in the hay with a good view of the floor below.

"You'll know love when it comes, don't worry. But don't jump at feelings just because you are wanting love." Easy advice from an old lady!

“Ms Em” replied the younger girl, philosophically, “If what I feel when I think about that feller is love, I don’t want it!”

After four months working in the saloon, Arabella was an expert at carrying liquids without spilling a drop, but she was still careful of the cream as she looked up at the woman next to her “Ms Em, I like talking to you.” She smiled as she made this statement, which was as simple as it was true.

Talk about this sort of thing with Mammy Cookie, and she would give you a whole bunch of old wives’ tales to cure whatever the problem was: putting a bull frog under your pillow seemed to be her particular favorite, a veritable universal panacea for anything! Bridget was too dumb to understand and Clara would just correct your grammar. As for Ms Devereau … the thought of talking about anything with her made the girl shudder.

"Here, now, put the jug on the table and have your dance."

Arabella did so with alacrity, it was clear that the band were tuning up to begin!

She should really stay and check out that Clara and Brendan had finally buried the hatchet (and not in each other’s heads!) and that Bridget was all right, but even a living saint like Arabella had to be a little selfish sometimes. She gave quick wave and with a quick squeak of “I gotta go!” she was gone.

"They're going to start dancing," Weedy observed, wrinkling up his nose as he took a bite of cookie. "I'm never going to dance with a girl! Never going to get married, either. I'm going to drive stages like Miz Addy, maybe in California, so I can find gold and be rich!"

Posted November 2, 2020 | Jonah Danforth | Present: Matilda, Col MacKenzie

Jonah was about to escort the lovey Miss Matilda to the dance floor when they were accosted by a soldier, and just as he decided to give up his turn to avoid conflict, Matilda did that for them, arranging for both gentlemen to have an opportunity to dance with her.

At the introductions, Jonah shook MacKenzie's hand. "Colonel, it's a pleasure to meet you. I admire that you are in the Military, especially out here." He chuckled. "The War cured any delusion I had about being a soldier, although it was my stint in the cavalry that steered me toward medicine, so I suppose I should be happy for that."

MacKenzie smiled. "If I had had another avocation to turn to, I can't be sure I myself would still be in uniform. We can always use more doctors out here. Not everyone agrees we need more soldiers. I try to give my own doctor as little to do as possible."

He'd had no direction before the War, and honestly, had it not been for his time as an orderly under an excellent surgeon, he would likely be dead by now.
