With: Amos Conroy and Ada Fetterman
Time of Day: Mid-morning
The conversation after the stand off with the Evergreen crowd had been fairly brief. Speed had been more concerned then about the safety of the trial and everyone involved, stating he would have a plan in place before the Circuit Judge arrived.
With Amos he was grateful for the support when it was needed. But he quickly turned the conversation to his appointment with Ada Fetterman, who was related to the late Captain William J. Fetterman who lost his life in 1866 at the hands of the Sioux.
Amos appeared at the office of Miss Fetterman and nearly eleven AM , an hour late. He walked in, hat in hand. No doubt she was aware of the commotion in the street and would be understanding.
“Miss Fetternman? Amos Conroy. Sorry to be late Ma’am, there was a disturbance in the street.” He explained.
“I am well aware of what happened Mister Conroy.” She said, and then looked up. “Mister Guyer insists on punctuality, Mister Conroy.”
He removed his hat, “Yes Ma’am, I fully intended to be on time, the Marshal was in a bit of a fix, which delayed me.”
“Mister Conroy, Marshal Guyer is quite capable in any given situation. Was he in need of help he has Deputy Pike. Now, sir. You will have free reign of the territory you explore, however, reports will be required once per month on the first of the month. Either in person or by telegram or mail, your choice.” Amos smiled as he watched her work at the papers on her desk and talk with him at the same time. “Your salary is one hundred twenty-five dollars per month. Commissions are paid when the properties are purchased, or sold, depending of course on Mister Guyer. Do you have any questions, Mister Conroy?”
“No Ma’am, I believe I understand what’ll be expected of me.” He agreed.
“Then, thank you for your time, sir. You start today.”She said, then continued with the work on her desk.
Amos replaced his hat on his head and simply said, “No Miss Fetterman, thank you.” And turned on a heel and marched out, an employed man. He recalled what she had said about Speed, “Marshal Guyer is quite capable in any given situation. Was he in need of help, he has Deputy Pike.” ‘She may have known what was going on, but likely needed help with her numbers.
