Isiah walked with his sister out of the barn as Weedy and Joshua caught up to them. Joshua picking up rocks as they walked along throwing them and then catching up to them and throwing them again.
Isiah laughed at his sister "You sweet?!" he teased. "He nudged her with his elbow and smirked, laughing about Weedy as well. "I don't know many a kid that would turn down any of these dishes.. Sounds like there's no shortage of sweets in this town." Not being familiar with the area he, of course, would follow his sisters lead to the restaurant.
As they walked along he was glad to hear the town was good to his sister and he was looking forward to getting to know more folk and the area. "I don't know if I'm going to be in a big hurry to find any work." He said to her as they boys ran ahead. "I'm not sure if I'm in the right mind for it yet, and when I do get work I want to have my head on straight." He was quick to add. "But I promise I won't be no liability to you. I can hunt food for us and of course I'll do anything around the house you need. Like we already said." He planned on getting up the very next morning and getting to work on that bed for the boys.
Oh, the cleverness of me!

"I know ya ain't no moocher." Addy returned the nudge, just a tad harder, then shrugged. "There's plenty'a things ya can do until ya find somethin' that suits ya better. I ain't destitute, I got a little set aside, so ya don't need ta worry on that. We'll get by."
She knew her brother, and knew that he wasn't going to be without steady work long. He knew his responsibilities and accepted them fully, he was the sort to make his own way, and she knew that it would weigh on him if he had to live off her for long.
"I hear th' doc is lookin' fer a nurse," she chuckled, "an' I know you can change bandages an' dole out medicine." He'd just arrived, but she was certain that he'd have a job within the week.

He knew Addy wouldn't think he was mooching off of her, he was just so glad to be here now and away from everything.
He chuckled when she mentioned him joining the doctor as his nurse.
"Now you know better than anyone I'd never survive as a nurse." Though he could certainly do the job, he'd done his fair share of mending and caring for injured soldiers during the war. "The sick and injured men out there would rather have a pretty lady tending to them and the women would rather have her soft touch." He smirked over at her, laughing a bit more... "And I'm neither of those!"
Oh, the cleverness of me!

"Like as not pass out at th' first sight'a blood!" Addy laughed and shook her head. "I reckon yer right, though, won't nobody want'a look up at yer ugly mug when they're sufferin'!"
They found a table at the cafe and placed their orders, then Addy shrugged. "You'll find work in no time, doncha worry on that, an' I know ya ain't gonna be idle in th' mean time." Maybe by making repairs around her place, folks would see what a good job he was doing and hire him. In any event, she was certain he would be doing something soon, since he wasn't the sort to stay idle long.
"Won't hurt ya none ta take a few days an' get yer thoughts straight, neither, an' there's plenty doin' 'round my place." Especially if he and Josh were staying on!

"Exactly like that!" Isiah said with a laugh as he followed his sister into the cafe, taking a seat and placing his order. Josh sat next to Weedy and whispered to his father what he wanted and Isiah ordered for him as well.
"I'm not worried none and I could use the time for sure." He commented as he sipped on the water the waitress had sat on the table for them. It sure felt good to be here, finally done travelling after all that time. He knew travelling alone like that with Josh could have gone a lot differently, so he was thankful they'd made it here safe and unharmed.
"What does Weedy here do during the day while yer workin'?" He asked looking between Weedy and Addy incase the boy wanted to answer. His wife had taken it upon herself to teach Josh so far, but Isiah won't one for sitting around and doing that type thing. Daisy had been an amazing teacher for their boy. Of course Josh would be find around the house with him until he found work, but once that happened he wasn't sure what he'd do with him during the day.
Oh, the cleverness of me!

"Goes ta school, durin' th' season," Addy answered, glancing at the boy, who was frowning. "Gonna make sure he's got a proper education, no matter what he wants ta do."
"I want to eat pie!" the boy declared as their desserts arrived. He looked eagerly at Josh, then back to the adults.
"Dig in fer whacha want!" Laughing, Addy handed around forks, letting it be a free-for-all! "An' pie eatin' ain't a job! Unless ya wanna be a cook." Something she really didn't mind, if that was something that interested him.
"I wanna be a pirate!" Weedy declared, his mouth full of pie.
"Oh, ask yer Uncle Isiah 'bout that!" Addy laughed again.

Isiah couldn't much blame the boy for frowning up at the thought of school, but he knew he also wanted the same thing for Josh. Isiah hated the fact that he couldn't really read nor write much at all.
"When's school in session?" He asked, not sure if they did things differently out here than back in Tennessee. Looking over at Josh he winked at him. "'Cause yer gonna be doing just that too."
Josh wrinkled up his face as he got some of the pie like his Pa. "Aw, that ain't no fun!" He declared and then heard what Weedy wanted to do and well he was already looking up to Weedy just this quick and his declaration made him like him even more. "Yea!" He nodded. "I'm gunna be a pirate too!"
Isiah laughed at the boys as his eyes fell on the delightful array of desserts that were sat before them and he wasted no time grabbing his own fork and stabbing it into the apple pie. With two growing boys at the table with them he and Addy had better get while the getting was good!
Isiah's mind went right to what his sister was thinking when she said to ask him about it. "Well he could just as easily ask you!" he said with his mouth half full, but he leaned towards the boys.
"When we were your age, Addy and I both declared we were gonna leave home one day together and we were gonna go to North Carolina. Go to the coast!" He smiled as he stabbed another bite of pie, pointing at the boys with his fork first as he continued. "We were gonna get our very own boat and we were gonna go and find our very own treasure. But.... " He leaned back and ate the bite. "Our oldest brother, and your Uncle Zachariah, he dashed our dreams. He told us that no pirates had ever buried any treasure!" Isiah shook his head taking another bite, trying some cake this time.
Oh, the cleverness of me!

Addy laughed as she munched pie. "I still think he was joshin' us, so's he could keep all that treasure ta himself!"
It was one of the good memories, and she cherished it.
"'Course, that didn't stop us from tryin' ta build our own pirate ship an' sail it out on th' pond! We made it all'a ten feet before Abs'lom an' Japath had ta fish us out! I think th' bits of it are still out there!"
"Me and Wyatt found a treasure chest in their pond!" Weedy declared with a grin, but frowned when Addy corrected him. "I and Wyatt..." Man, she knew more than she let on! "Yes, ma'am."
"School's back after harvest, sometime early September," Addy explained, "we'll get both boys enrolled, an' keep up on their lessons in th' mean time."

Isiah laughed along with his sister as she recalled the boat...er...ship that the two of them built together.
"I bet yer right." He laughed as he sat down his fork, full from all the pie and cake he had sampled, crumbs only left behind by now. "And maybe he buried it on the farm and one day.." He looked at the boys, looking between them, raising his brows. "...you two can find it when we visit." If they ever visited again.
Josh's ears perked up when Weedy declared that he and his friend Wyatt had found the treasure in the pond. "Is it still there?" He asked the boy as Addy corrected the way he had spoken. All this school talk was making him grumpy!
"Ma always did the teachin'!" He told his Pa, crossing his arms his brows pulling together. "I don't wanna go to no school." He huffed as he looked at Addy when she suggested they would be enrolled in the Fall. Then he wondered if Weedy knew.... "are the teachers nice there?" He'd heard horror stories from a few boys back home about the teachers there smacking them over the hands with rulers! The thought made him shudder!
Oh, the cleverness of me!

"Nah, we opened it, and there wasn't anything good, just some old rags and a soggy book." Weedy sighed, consoling himself with another bite of pie, then moved on to other things. "School's all right, the teacher is nice except when she gives us homework." He shrugged, then added, "But you can meet Wyatt, his dad has a farm, we can play stick-ball and marbles, you can borrow mine, and there's a swing...you'll need a slate, though." He looked at Isiah.
"We c'n do some shoppin'," Addy commented, leaning back in her chair and sipping the last of her coffee. "Don' worry none, if that teacher gives ya any saddle sores, me an' yer pa'll take care'a it!" A threat that didn't really hold any weight, but the boy didn't know that!
