Sit down, shut up, don't touch anythin'

"Smart horse," Addy chuckled, "brung ya right here where he'd get food." She grinned as she refilled the cup and held it to him if he wanted more. "He's all set in his own stall with hay an' grain," she assured him, knowing how important a body's horse was to them. "So, ya got th' energy ta talk to th' sheriff, or ya need a bit more time? An'...ya expectin' trouble ta follow ya?"
She had set up precautions, the doors that were normally wide open were barred shut and she had Weedy up in the loft keeping an eye out for trouble. The sheriff and deputy were aware as well, and she had her Colt and shotgun near at hand, as well as an archaic LeMat. She was ready for trouble.
"Got food, too, if yer up to it."

"Trouble...can't say." He said, his voice a bit stronger. "Willin', yeah, yeah I'm willin' and the food, that sounds real good."

"Awright, then." Addy helped him to sit up, slipping a folded blanket behind his back. "Go slow, no need ta split open them stitches an' start bleedin' over everything."
She scooped some of the stew into another mug and called out the door, "Hey, Weedy, go on an' fetch th' law...Pronto's awake now. An' then come on back fer supper!"
As she handed the stew to Pronto, she asked, "Ya good with that, or ya gonna need help? Oh, an' I didn't cook it, so it oughta be safe!"

As she handed the stew to Pronto, she asked, "Ya good with that, or ya gonna need help? Oh, an' I didn't cook it, so it oughta be safe!"?
He could barely let out a partial somewhat choked laugh then added, “At this point anything’s better than my cookin’ and I appreciate you taken me in even if my horse dropped me off here.” He took a bite of the stew, and she was right, it was good, of course, he had no experience with her cooking. The thing he knew was he was weak and he didn't let sitting up fool him. He was in no shape to defend himself should the shooter come by to finish the job. "Didn't figger on gettin' shot while trailin' that feller, guess I figger wrong."

“At this point anything’s better than my cookin’ and I appreciate you taken me in even if my horse dropped me off here.”
"Smart horse, that," she commented with a grin, "but then, I reckon as how critters are smarter'n most folks...an' kinder, too."
"Didn't figger on gettin' shot while trailin' that feller, guess I figger wrong."
"So, was it him what got th' drop on ya?" she asked, not sure who 'him' was and not sure it mattered, "or he got a friend helpin'?" Maybe his prey had gotten behind him somehow, although she figured as how Pronto was a good tracker and wouldn't let such a thing happen. So maybe the man had friends looking out for him...or it could have just been something random, wrong place, wrong time.
"Shouldn't be any trouble while yer here, ain't no one but me, th' doc an' sheriff know yer here, so eat up an' rest up."

“Nope, wasn’t the man I was follerin’what took the shot. I figger he’da killed me outright. Not the kind that misses.” Pronto took another bite, chewed and swallowed then said. “Thanks Addy, an’ I ain’t likely to forget this neither.” He paused, “a man of my kind don’t generate too many friends. They see them guns an think the worse, not knowin’ spit about me.”
After a moment he added, "Stew's good, ought-ta tell them that made it to keep on." Then he went back to eating.

Addy shrugged, filling a bowl for herself and settling in a chair beside him. "Reckon I understand havin' folks judge ya by things that aren't true, or how ya look." Not that she minded, it was a path she had chosen, so one she was comfortable with and was happy to take. "Don't really care much 'bout th' opinion of short-minded folk, but I know what ya mean...bein' told ya ain't welcome, havin' high-faultin' ladies that ain't got a thought in their head wasn't put there by their husbands judgin'..."
She grinned and shrugged. "I try ta take people fer how they treat me, an' I know I'm incredible an' refined, so I say pshaw on them!" Then she laughed. "Same goes fer them that try an' shoot at my friends!"

Pronto failed in his attempt to stifle a laugh, but it made the shoulder wound hurt. Yet what she said was fairly accurate, not that there weren’t women capable of thinking for themselves, as there surely were, he’d known far to many of them to deny that fact.
She grinned and shrugged. "I try ta take people fer how they treat me, an' I know I'm incredible an' refined, so I say pshaw on them!" Then she laughed. "Same goes fer them that try an' shoot at my friends!"
“Well Addy, I have to fully agree with yer assessment of some of them women out there, but they ain’t all empty headed.” Pike defended. “As fer shooters, well hell, back shooters is the worst! I’ll be nailin’ his hide to the barn door, count on that!”

"Aw, now, that'd just make th' barn stink!" Addy grinned. "But I don't doubt you'll cause 'em mayhem when..."
There was a noise from the main barn, the small side door opening, and she tensed, moving for her shotgun until she heard Weedy call out.
"Miz Addy! It's just me, and I brought the doctor!" A moment later the boy was at the small room, Jonah in tow.
"Ma'am..." Jonah nodded to Addy, then glanced at Pronto. "I saw the by here and he told me you were awake, so I thought I'd check on you." The man was eating, that was a good sign!

"Not yer door, Addy...His door!" He jerked his head toward the sound of the door scraping on it's threshold and automatically fumbled about for his gun which was not close to hand. Then the boy Weedy called out to announce the Doc's arrival.
"Ma'am..." Jonah nodded to Addy, then glanced at Pronto. "I saw the by here and he told me you were awake, so I thought I'd check on you." The man was eating, that was a good sign!
"Seen better days ,Doc. Hurts a mite more'n I care for." Pronto said. "This here's some good grub. Addy said she didn't make it, but I got my doubts. I mean could well be, just thinkin'."
