"No, you're right, a proper church wedding is better." Emeline smiled as she leaned her head on his shoulder, looking at the house. "There's enough to do without trying to rush things here, and you can't rush the shipments of the furniture anyway, even with Miss Addy helping!"
She munched a little on a meat pie, then added, "And I promise to stick with the decision, we can have flowers decorating the church, and have the preacher officiate, and it will be easier for folks to get there. Clara can help me, I know she'll enjoy that. I'm sorry to be so indecisive, with Andrew, our mothers did most of the planning, and we just learned to sit back and be quiet!"
It hadn't been too horrible, not like some of the stories that she had heard about mothers domineering, and in truth, she'd been happy to have most of that burden taken off of her, and in the end, the ceremony had been beautiful, if a bit more than she and Andrew wanted.
"I'll keep it small and simple," she promised, "and all that really counts is that when it's over we'll be married."

"That’s what they told me at the mercantile. Don’t seem fair does it, but the Anderson’s said they’d what they could about gettin’ here faster.” He said, just enjoying the sunlight filtered through the Cottonwood leaves. There were several Cottonwoods in a stand near the falls, along with Ponderosa and lodge pole pines and several other types of pine, spruce and fir’s. The property was timber rich.

"Sounds about right, and ain't she an' her fella about to tie the knot? Seems I heard somethin' about that not long ago." He asked in passing. Sounded to him like the sky pilot was to have a busy season. he took up a second meat pie and bit into it. The savory flavors flooding his mouth with their richness. "Was you to have a mother to help with the plannin' doubt I'd be yer beau. She'd 'a run me off with her broom for sure when I come callin'!" He smiled, took another bite. "An' don't think fer a moment she wouldn't'ov!"

"You can keep it big 'n grand if you want. 'sup ta you." He offered. "Honeymoon'll have to wait a bit though. What with Clara marryin' an' all, nobody ta run the cafe for ya. But that's okay, I reckon. I'll have me some bidness to attend to, so I figgered we'd combine bidness with pleasure."

"Well, as I said, I'd be happy to have a honeymoon here, in a tent, so long as you're here and there aren't any distractions." A trip would be nice, but the point was just having time to really get to know each other, without the mundane routine of every-day life. "I can close the cafe if I need to, I don't think we'd suffer from the loss of income."
She really hadn't had time in a very long while to just relax and not have to worry about something needing her attention, so anything that wasn't work would be welcome. "There will be plenty of time to travel later, I don't mind." Of course, 'plenty of time' could very well be just a few months, depending on what the Good Lord had in mind!

Barnabas simply smiled at Em's last statement about traveling later, there was business that would not wait until 'later.' At least not 'much later.' Today was not the time to discuss it the way that he would need too with her.
He had know too many couple that said 'there was plenty of time to travel,' which became never. He was not concerned about that so much as what needed to be done, and what his desire was for them.
"Life just has a way of robbin' folks of that later option. Most have trouble ever takin' that time with one another away from what they know ever' day. But we've time yet afore the knot tyin'." He said gently. "So, I reckon we'll jest see where it leads and what happens betwixt now and ar' weddin' day." He smiled, "'course, we need us a date for alla this marryin' bidness. Don't we?"

"I think Friday, May 12th? That gives us three weeks to finish up the plans and let everyone know." Emeline smiled a bit shyly. "My dress will be done by then, too, so I'll have something to wear...I wouldn't want to scandalize anyone!"
She laughed. "Would you mind talking to the preacher, just to be sure he and the church are available?" She grinned. "That way you can feel as if you're contributing, and I really would appreciate the help." It didn't occur to her to have an alternative plan, in case the date wasn't suitable...she'd worry about that later if she had to, make other arrangements, although she was starting to get anxious about the whole thing...she was ready to be married!

"sounda 'bout right ta me. Ever'thing'll be in place, ready to go so yeah, May the 12th." Barnabas agreed. "We drug this out just about as far as we oughtta."

"Contributin'?" He looked from her to the almost finished house. "Yep, it shore will. I ride on over't the church tommara mornin' an' see what the pastor says an' let ya know. Might not be a problem ayt all. Mostly weddin's seem ta be on Saturday 'er Sunday, so this here Friday weddin' should be no proble, a'tall."

"Hey, now!" Emeline gave him a playful nudge. "I didn't mean to imply that you haven't do so much with the house...I'm just referring to the wedding plans!"
She kissed him lightly on the nose. "But...if you feel left out, you can get the flowers together, or extend invitations..." Men usually didn't want to have anything to do with the planning, and honestly, she didn't either, except to make it simple, yet nice. There had already been some plans made anyway, but most were last-minute things.
"Oh, I could use a buggy, to take me from the cafe to the church...I know it's not far, but I'd rather not get my dress all dusty." And, of course, riding Noel wouldn't be wise in all the layers of material.

"I can see to the buggy, that makes sense not to be traipsin' over't the church, and ridin' Noel, well that's jest plumb loco. Far as the invites, you wanting ta hand write 'em 'er have McVay print 'em up? Far as I'm concerned, why ether's fine, 'cept maybe printed ones 'er real eye catchers. Seen a couple in my time." He agreed, making plans for a wedding was not exactly Pike's strong suit.
"Now the rest, I ain't real sure you want me ta take a hand in it. Might not be what I'd be real good at." He at least was honest about it. "The house, I can do that, there buggy, no problem there, but flowers an such like, I dunno. Maybe best ta leave it alone."

"A buggy is a great help." Emeline kissed his cheek, "And I think something in the paper is perfect...I mean, I can't think of anyone that might show up who I wouldn't invite, and that way we aren't missing anyone." She surely didn't want any of their friends to feel snubbed because of a simple oversight.
"There is so much to do, but a lot of it is last-minute." Emeline sighed, then chuckled. "But, in the end, all we need are ourselves and the parson...or even Judge Peabody, the rest is just nice."
All that really mattered was that they were legally wed by the end of May 12th!

"Well, now Dutton Peabody ain't no judge. Damn fine lawyer, 'scuse me, fergot myself there. But there's ol' Ben Robinson, he's a judge, but I' m thinkin' the pastor'll do, er priest, 'er whatever he likes ta be called. We'll be good." Barnabas commented with confidence, "An' the buggy, not even anythin' ta be worryin' about. Ever'thing's gonna be perfect."
"Best we start thinkin' about headin' back. Not that Speed cain't hold his own, but I like to check in time ta time, jest in case." The he laughed, thouuh he was serious. There was never any telling of what might happen at any given time. Mostly nothing. "Before you start ta thinkin' we could move in taday."
