- Timeline
1831 - Born in Athens, Ohio, where his father Meindert owned a successful lumber mill. As the firstborn son, Christoph was raised to fill his father's shoes at some point. He spent all of his time at the mill with Meindert whenever he wasn't in school. As he grew older, that time became less and less but his father still kept him up to date with the business.
In short succession, Christoph attended college, married, and was made a partner in his father's company. After gold was found at Sutter's Mill in California in 1848 and people began to move west, Christoph and Meindert realized that the lumber business could prove very lucrative. However, neither of them wanted to move all the way across the country so they settled on Montana.
With funding from his father, Christoph, Anna, and their children moved to Montana, to the settlement that would soon become Kalispell. Christoph and his lumber mill were instrumental in building the town.
