"Come on, Missy, yer not gonna use that..." He advanced on her...
Katherine swallowed hard and pointed the gun at the man. "Take one more step and we'll both find out."
Stopping, Kyle stared at the woman and then laughed. "So, you've got spunk. I like that in my women."
He then started advancing towards Katherine again. Knowing that she had no choice, she pulled back the trigger, in the process squeezing her eyes shut and fired.

At the sound of the shot from the cabin, Case mounted his horse and plunged through the tall grass, galloping headlong toward Addy and the coach. Two were down, but the third was in the cabin, obviously unconcerned about what was happening out in the yard.
Jerking the reins hard, the horse skidded to a halt as Case dismounted before the animal stopped; "Addy! You okay?" He asked, still holding the Winchester and swinging it into action.

Outside the Cabin...
Things were happening fast, almost in a blur, but this wasn't Addy's first scrape with trouble, so she kept her head, reckoning on what was happening as it happened. Right now, she knew that Kathrine needed help in the cabin and Case was in the best position to do that, so she waved him on.
"Fine, I'm fine...Go!" As she spoke, she scooped up a pistol, then took a deep breath as she surveyed the scene around her. The 'leader' was still moving, so she went over to him and kicked a pistol out of his reach.
"Wished ya'd found someone else ta rob?" she growled, putting a foot on his chest. There was a growing puddle of blood from his chest and back...he was dying and there was nothing to be done for it. Softening, Addy dropped to a knee beside him. "Anyone ya want me ta say somethin' to on yer behalf?" she asked. The man might be a vicious criminal, but he might have a family somewhere who cared.
Inside the Cabin...
The shot had come as a complete surprise, Kyle hadn't expected the woman to actually pull the trigger, and he dropped his gun as he crumpled to the floor...the big advantage of a scatter-gun was the 'scatter' part...all you had to do was aim in the general direction and you were bound to hit something, and she did. Fortunately for Kyle, Kathrine had flinched at the last second and the shot had gone a bit wide. Oh, it had hit home, peppering several small holes in his chest, but not yet so bad that he wasn't able to scramble to his knees.
"Fuck, bitch," he muttered in a mixture of anger and respect, "you shot me!" He shook his head, then reached for his pistol...

Case was at the door and three long steps and his boot slammed into the wood partition which yielded easily, but loudly as the fame splintered. He held the Winchester at his waist, as he stepped inside. The man turned, pistol loose in his hand, blood streaming from his wound. Case fired, even though there was no need, the man was dying even as he toppled backward and crumpled to the baren wood floor.
Case spun, looking at Katherine. "You alright, Ma'am?" He asked staring at the woman and her grip on the gun. "All clear. everything's alright."

Kate sat there for a moment, not knowing what to do next. A little while ago she had been enjoying a pleasant ride to her new home and now here she was with her back against a wall, a rifle at her side and a dead man a few feet away. She had known that life out here was going to be tough but she hadn't it expected to happen as suddenly as this.
It was going to take a little while to process what had just happened, but she would learn from it. If she didn't then she would have to go back to Chicago, and she didn't want to do that. To have come all the way out here just to turn back at the first sign of trouble was not an option. Mentally, she made a note that after she had settled in, she would find someone who could teach how to shoot a gun.
Turning her head towards the Sheriff, she nodded. "I'm a little bit shaken by how quickly this all happened, but I think will be fine."

Case dropped the Colt into his holster and stepped toward the schoolmarm. "Come, let's get you outside. Sorry to have shot him, but a gutshot man is a horrible thing to watch. Best he's out of his misery." He held out a had to her. "Perhaps I best load these varmints and take them in to Kalispell. Ride along just in case. These are some bad actors, and it's best they're done for." Sort of an odd statement for a man of his caliber. Fact of the matter, he was no better than any of the three.

Nodding, she let the sheriff help her up and escort out of the door. Briefly looking at the dead man on the floor as she left the building, she surmised that she would have to probably get used to this sort of thing. Kalispell may be a civilised town, but it was still had a long way to go before it would be what some people would call tamed.
As she waited for her eyes re-adjust, she looked around the yard. She could see Addy leaning over one of the men and for a moment briefly wondered where the other one was. When she saw him on the ground, she sighed. Three men dead and for what? A few dollars that might be in the mail?
Realising, she was a little bit more shaken than she thought she was, she turned to the sheriff. "If you don't mind, I think I would like to sit down inside the stage, while you..."

Case grabbed her elbow, his right hand to her waist in order to support her. What she had done and seen was catching up to her. "Easy now Katherine, easy. Here." He gently eased her down on the step. "You catch your breath a moment, then we'll get you to the coach."
He held onto her, knowing she had just shot a man, and from her reactions, it was her first such action. Not everyone was like him, able to take a life without thought or concern. The pause was brief, but the walk to the coach was slow as she recovered. Once to the vehicle, he opened the door and then helped her inside.
"You rest easy, I'll see to all this out here." He said softly.
He looked to Addy and shouted; "You alright over there? He still breathin'?"

Addy looked over as Case helped Katherine into the coach, relieved to see that the woman was all right, although her pallor told a chilling tale. For now, Addy would let Case deal with her.
"This one was alive fer a bit," she commented, shaking her head. "Has a gal in Abilene, son...made bad choices, him an' his lady." She looked over at Case. "Reckon we'd be happy fer a escort th' rest'a th' way, not that I think there'll be more trouble." That would be too much of a coincidence. "I say we load these critters onto their horses," she used 'critters' in deference to the lady, although she was thinking something stronger, "pack 'em into Sherman, collect any bounty, sell th' horses an' send ta th' widow." If there was a reward, she'd give most of hers to Katherine. "Maybe let th' lady have her pick'a th' animals if she wants?"

Case stood listening to Addy and looking at Buckeye Barnes whose life had ebbed out through the hole through his chest. Case Steelgrave was an excellent shot and he knew Kyle Barnes pretty well. “Cheated the hangman.” He spat. “I’ll get ‘em loaded on their horses and ride on in with you. Doubt there’ll be anymore trouble, but best I explain this to yer Marshal. You got one yet, or is Hannah Cory still holdin’ down the fort?” He paused.
“I can tell you that there’s paper on all three, not sure what the reward might be, but there’s some for sure. Never knew about his girl or the child, of course, we weren’t exactly on talking terms. Sad thing for the both of them. Their rigs, saddles and horses’ll bring good money, except for the one Katherine may want. An,d part of the bounty is rightfully hers.” He smiled. “Best get to it.”
