"Well, ya see now," Addy explained after another sip of coffee, "th' main backer fer it all is a Steelgrave...Miz Leah, th' daughter, an' folks seem ta think she's doin' all this fer her father."
Addy shrugged, sipping more coffee, enjoying the conversation, even though she wasn't a gossip. But this wasn't gossip, it was facts, pure and sure.
"Now, I don't understand what would be so bad if she was speakin' fer ol' Elias...there'd still be a hospital, an'' eventually a orphanage..." She shrugged. "Some folks'er just contrary."

"Well, ya see now," Addy explained after another sip of coffee, "th' main backer fer it all is a Steelgrave...Miz Leah, th' daughter, an' folks seem ta think she's doin' all this fer her father."
“And of course the town looks down on mister Steelgrave, I mean to say, deservedly so, he sounds like the overbearing type from what you’ve said.” Alice gave a pause for a moment, “There’s always on like that wherever you go, but to take it out on the daughter trying to get something good done."
Addy shrugged, sipping more coffee, enjoying the conversation, even though she wasn't a gossip. But this wasn't gossip, it was facts, pure and sure.

“I agree. What could the harm be? Do they think this Elias is going to impersonate a doctor?” Alice asked, in jest. “I’m sorry, but people can be so ignorant about what is in their best interest when a good disliking gets in the way. How does Marshal Guyer see this situation?”

"Marshal's all in, far as I know," Addy commented, "but then, he's a sensible man,"[/b] grinning, she winked, "an' right handsome, too!"
For a moment, she laughed, but then turned more serious. "I just hope that them that are against th' idea don't cause so much trouble that it comes ta shootin'. An' th' funny thing is, may be Elias Steelgrave himself that causes problems, if he reckons that Miss Leah is tryin' ta be defiant."
She never would fathom how folks' minds worked, that was certain.

"Marshal's all in, far as I know," Addy commented, "but then, he's a sensible man," grinning, she winked, "an' right handsome, too!"
Alice smiled at the statement. “Sensible, I didn’t know there was such a thing in men these days.” But she remembered him a bit differently, he was a man traveling on business, as if he had no roots, nor wished to have any. It would seem that that had chsnged.
“I’d like to meet this Leah Steelgrave, defiant sounds just like her, well from what you’ve said about her. Seems to me she wants something and is willing to fight for it, no matter what anyone says.” Alice pointed out. She thought she might like this woman, now there was yet another reason to ride into Kalispell and have a look see for herself. "As far as Mister Steelgrave causing problems, problems that involve shooting or not, he and the rest best stand back and watch what a woman can do."

"Miz Leah surely is a body ta be reckoned with," Addy declared, although she couldn't say if her motives were purely personal, or a way of seeking some sort of revenge on her family. It didn't matter, in the long run there would still be a hospital and orphanage in the territory.
"Problem with Mister Steelgrave, 'sides th' fact that he's Mister Steelgrave," Addy observed, "is that he's been here a long while. Now, yer Eastern gents, they expect a bit more refinement an' propriety from ladies 'cause they don't know 'bout us out here. But ol' Elias, he knows we ain't ta be ignored, an' he won't care that it's ladies he'd be fightin' against."
The man had no scruples, so he'd surely not hesitate to kill a woman, should he feel the need, even if that woman was his own daughter.
“It’s the trouble with the foolish men, thinking that we can be ignored, used as they wish, that we have no rights to live as we wish.” Alice declared. “Sorry, I do tend to go on about such things. It seems that this Mister Steelgrave is a danger to the community as well as to his own daughter.”
She shook her head in disgust. “Hopefully there are those that watch out for her, though from what you’ve said, it seems Miss Steelgrave is plenty able to take care of herself. Yes, I do need to make her acquaintance. More coffee?” It was good to have a woman to talk with, one that was of the country they were in, not one of frills.
“How does Marshal Guyer view this situation with Miss Steelgrave? Has he had to interfere in this at all?” She asked, wondering what his stance was, both personally and as a peace keeper.

"Well, I know there's a couple'a men that trail Miz Leah," Addy commented, "ta keep her safe, 'though I ain't never heard'a such a thing fer someone that ain't a politician." She shrugged, then added dryly, "Fer all th' good it did President Lincoln."
Then there was another question about Speed and Addy had to start wondering on the interest. Still, it wasn't hers to say, nor to ponder on.
"So far ain't been nothin' fer him ta intervene on, but I've no question he would, should th' need arise. He did take her to th' dance a while back." She shrugged and took another sip of coffee. "Don't recall that they danced, though, an' he had ta go out on patrol, so I think it was Dr. Danforth who seen her back."
Of course, she hadn't been paying that much attention to anyone but Jay, and that had been pretty distracting!
'But then, Speed...he don't mind helpin' where he can. He's been helpin' me with some'a th' legalities with Weedy. He's a good friend."
“Body guards? The woman has body guards? Who pays them? Forgive me, but I’ve never heard of such a thing.” Alice responded, somewhat taken aback by the notion of body guards.
“I heard tell that Kate Warne, you know her, first woman Pinkerton? Well she was blunt about it, said was she on guard at Ford’s theater, well, it never would have happened! Booth would never have gotten close to Lincoln’s box.” Yes, she needed to meet this woman, there was a whole lot more to her than it seemed this town was able to see.
And she wanted to see Marshal Guyer as well. A man always willing to help? Surely didn’t sound like the man she had met after the war, but that was close to ten years back. Not that he was not the type that wouldn’t help, that was obvious, but he seemed caught by the wanderlust.
“Seems to me Miss Addy, you quite the interesting town.”

“Body guards? The woman has body guards? Who pays them? Forgive me, but I’ve never heard of such a thing.”
"Reckon she pays 'em," Addy observed, "heard she has her own money, not tied ta her family." Something like that! "Funny thing is, it's mostly her own family why she has 'em." And how sad that anyone felt it was necessary to seek protection from your own kin.
“I heard tell that Kate Warne, you know her, first woman Pinkerton? Well she was blunt about it, said was she on guard at Ford’s theater, well, it never would have happened! Booth would never have gotten close to Lincoln’s box.”
"Danged pity she wasn't." Addy may have helped the Confederacy, but she still had understood Lincoln's importance to the nation's recovery, and what a loss his death had been.
“Seems to me Miss Addy, you quite the interesting town.”
"Certainly has its moments, an' its characters." Addy grinned. "I think you'll like it well enough, leastways until Winter hits an' makes th' roads impassable, an' th' cold creeps inta every bone!"

Alice laughed, "Sounds like the Dakotas. Miserable winters, but come spring with the wild flowers, simply beautiful. But hard winters, best be layin' in wood and supplies to last it out. Nothing I haven't been tasked with before. Of course there's the stock."
"Pa has this idea of increasing his heard, well, our heard I suppose. If a man could call near two dozen head a herd. But we've horses, ten, a stud an' eight mares, so we'll see some foals drop come next spring, Caves too. Prob'ly gonna need a couple hands before summer's out. Dread that, but to grow, we'll need hands."
There was a barn, which needed work, a couple out buildings, also needing repairs. One must have served as a bunk house, by the size of it. Actually, it was clear that the place had been a going concern at one time. She would have to ask her Pa what had happened. If he knew.
"You now anything about this place?" She asked suddenly.
