Pastor Gideon Evans got up from his desk where he was writing the sermon for the upcoming meeting on Sunday. Now that he had recovered from his recent illness, he was able to take of his flock more efficiently. It also helped Father Reed had taken on the task of visiting the ranches and farms outside of town. The area he had to cover was large and it was a godsend that somebody had been sent to look after those who were unable to make it to town for regular services.

Opening the door, he was surprised to see the town's lawman, "Good day, Marshal. Is this a social visit or have you come on business?"

"Perhaps it is a bit of both." He began, "There was an incident in town where a wanted man drew on another fellow and was killed. At any rate, the man had a reward coming but refused it. He said that he wanted it to go where it would do some good, Pastor. So, I am delivering part to you and part to Miss Bowen up to the school." He paused to let that sink in.

"I'm afraid that the fellow, a bounty hunter by trade, will find himself in the next issue of the Union. But I have a dilemma you see. The reward is five hundred dollars, split equally is two hundred fifty, now I wonder if that is truly equitable." Speed continued, "But to give one less seems to fly in the face of fairness."

Pastor Evans was a bit surprised at the turn of events. Since the gunman didn't want the money it was logical to give it to the community. Whether or not people approved that would up to them. As for himself, if any good was to come out of a situation like this, it would have to be in a way that would benefit those less fortunate.

"Yes Marshall, I understand what you mean. We can certainly use the money to make some repairs to the church building before winter comes but I doubt we will use it all, so whatever is left over can go to helping those who are still suffering after the Whitefish tragedy. Even though it's been almost nine months, there are still a few people that need a roof over their head."

Speed could see the Pastors surprise at the news. "Well sir, this should go a long way toward repairs and helping others. It is a hefty sum, but it will go to good use I'm sure." It was clear that such a sum could do for the buildings and for the needy. He handed the Parson a cloth sack with the two hundred fifty dollars in coin and paper.

"You know sir, I doubt anyone would have anything to say if you gave the place a white washing after the repairs." Speed suggested. "Spruce her up a bit. Maybe have new pews built, if need be. What with a ten pound smoked ham costing a dollar thirty, yes, you'll be able to do a lot of good, and have the church and parsonage looking brand new. Just a suggestion mind you. Anyway Parson, I need to get up to see Miss Bowen, I imagine the school will need repairs as well, so this money will be putting some folks to work."

Pastor Evans smiled, "Yes, the buildings does need some repairs and it could do with some new books as well."

He looked at the sack, and nodded, "Well, the best place for this until we order the materials we need is the bank. Then I will have to organise a meeting with the elders so we can work out what exactly we need."

Holding out his hand, he sighed, "Thank you thinking us and the school board. It was just a shame that it had to come from something unpleasant but I suppose it's not for us to question things like this. After all, the Bible does say that all things work together for good."

"Yes sir Pastor, that's true." Speed agreed, "and yes, the bank allows for safe keeping, not that I expect anyone to bother the church or the school, but better safe than sorry. Best be on my way, sir. A good day to you" With that he mounted his horse and headed for the school house.

As he had with Pastor Evans, he would present the money to see Miss Bowen. There was of course, a school board, but his idea was to present these funds to the ones that would know what needed to be done. As he neared the school house, paint or white washing was evidently near if not the top of the list.

From what he knew, funding for repairs was hard to come by for the school, but the closer he got the more he saw the need for repairs as well as paint. He stopped and stepped down, ground hitching his horse. School had been dismissed, but there were still a few children using the swing and the teeter-totter. He walked in trough the open Door.

"Miss Bowen?" He called out as he removed his hat.

Kate looked up from the book she was reading and frowned when she saw who it was. She stood up and met the man halfway across the room. "Good afternoon, marshall, what brings you here today?"

Part of her was hoping that it wasn't a fight between some of the boys on their way home from school or some sort of bad news.

"No Ma'am, nothing of the kind, actually, there was a shooting in town a wanted man was killed. The bounty hunter declined the reward, said he'd like it to go somewhere to help people." He smiled before he continued. "There is a portion of that reward here fore you and whatever this school needs."

"Now I know there is a school board, and I suppose I should have turned this cash over to them, but then, I know how that can turn out, so, there's two hundred fifty dollars, coin and paper, in the sack. Same as I gave to the good Parson Evans, you can get a lot of repairs done to the building. Order new primers, and other supplies, because, Ma'am I'm afraid that the school Board has no idea what you need."

Kate sighed, "A shooting? Did it have anything to do with the troubles between Evergreen and Lost Lake?"

Even though she hadn't heard anything from Shade for months, anything about Lost Lake still interested her. Maybe it was the hope that she hear that Shade was back. If he was, then what? It wasn't like he was beholding to her and there had been no promises. In fact, she didn't know he was gone until about a week or so after he had left. She was in the General Store when Shade's foreman, Mike Wentworth came in and mentioned it in his dealings with Mr. Wilson.

The marshall's answer to her question bought her attention back to why he was here.

"That's good," she replied, "Now about the money...yes it will come in very handy and I am sure the school board will approve. They're not as bad as everyone thinks, they're just frugal."
