"Everybody can feather their nest, but it's not just anybody that can lay an egg!"
"That's one way of putting it," Eve replied, "However, this is not the time or place to be discussing Miss Shaw's or your attributes."
"Oh don't worry, Miss Hardy. Mister McVay ain't... isn't going to use it as a story in tomorrow's Union, are you Mr McVay?" Arabella reasoned, correcting her English as she went: Mr Darling was always going on to her about her bad diction and elocution. Then she grinned "Hey imagine if you did, though: can you imagine the headline "Shocking News!! Dress Taken In!! Chest Too Flat!! Mr McVay takes a closer look at Miss Mudd's Décolletage!! See more inside!!" Bet that'd sell a few copies." she laughed.
Turning to Phinn, she said graciously, "Please forgive my young friend for being so forward in this regard. She still has a lot to learn."
Arabella nodded her head demurely, trying to look chastened but biting her lip so as not to laugh.
"I'm sorry, Miss Hardy. I just don't know what the dickens to do to make my image more respectable. I mean, I go to church regular...ly. I help people in need. I don't swear, I don't drink. Why, I'm practically a saint!" she exclaimed.
"Every town needs a newspaper."
Phin suppressed a grin until she began talking about the 'what ifs' of an article that would never see the light of day. Perhaps one day there would be periodicals that delved into that sort of reporting, but not today, and not in the Union. "I'm afraid Miss Mudd has a most vivid imagination, however, I can assure you that such an edition is not liable to happen anytime soon, what with the Marshal wounded, but hopefully recovering. Among other things that are newsworthy."
Turning to Phinn, she said graciously, "Please forgive my young friend for being so forward in this regard. She still has a lot to learn."
Of course, then Arabella tossed her good qualities into the mix, of which there were several, and for the most part, Phin knew were true, yet there were those moments, and far too many of them, that detracted from the positive side of the girl. "Yes, those traits you profess to have are factual, verifiable if anyone wished to examine those positive things about you. It is the rest of those personality traits that simply need a bit of polishing. You are a good person, I know that for a fact. I accept your apology without reservations."
