"Yes Ma'am, you staying over is not a problem at all," Barnabas said. "And if you need to get home I can have one of the boys get you there like Em said, but with this weather, which is less than predictable, I'd hold out til morning." And he wa serious about the weather, the rain had slacked off, but had stared up again.

"I'll run out and get Pythias. see what he can do about rustling up some supper for us." He announced. "He has been a great righthand in more ways than one." With that he took up his slicker and headed out as he pulled it on, Pythias would be in the bunkhouse with all of the boys. He would not send anyone out in this weather. The cattle would be just fine.

Most of the boys were outside standing under the overhang, some smoking, others just loafing, even in the downpour. He hustled over to the bunkhouse, a wide grin plastered on him as the rain pelted him, stinging his face. "A boy! Got me a son! Wheeler Pike is his name!" The hands erupted in cheers and hoots at the news. "Where's Pythias?"

"Right'cheer Boss." Came the reply as Pytis pushed through the other. "You id'jets get inside afore ya catch yer death!" He orderd, "How can I help?"

"Supper'd be good. Got a lady stayin' on that helped with the birth." Was the answer.

"Shore, you get back over there I'm on my way soon's I get my slicker." Pythias replied. A grand day he was thinking, even in this rain!

"Yes, please stay."  Emeline smiled.  "Cookie and I were working on steaks and potatoes, and we were planning cobbler and chocolate cookies."  She chuckled.  "Not common fare here, but the crew was working hard this morning chasing down my horses.  They're fine breeding stock from back East...Morgans."  Her smile widened.  "If you've any eye for horses, you ought to take a look at them."

She was mighty proud of the horses, but knew it would be a few days before she could start tending to them again.  She was already thinking of ways to be out in the barn and keeping Wheeler with her, even though she was pretty sure that Barnabas would object.  Of course, it was contingent on how she was feeling, but she had no doubt she'd recover quickly, once she had a chance to get some rest.

Bonnie nodded.  It made sense to stay the night and she would be glad to do so.  There was some cleaning up to do where Em had just given birth and she was sure the woman would appreciate not having to do it herself.

"Thank you for kind invitation and yes, I will stay.  The meal sounds wonderful," Bonnie replied.

Considering that they were still in a very public area of the house, Bonnie knew that Em would soon have to find her way upstairs to her bedroom.  "When you're ready we might try and get you into bed so that you can rest.  I take it that you have crib already prepared."

"I'm glad you're staying, I'd be worried about you trying to make it to town, even if there are hands with you."  Slowly, Emeline sat, cradling Wheeler against her chest.  Having had his fill of his first meal, the infant was asleep...for now!

"Let's go ahead and make it up those stairs now, before Barnabas comes back and insists on carrying me!"  She laughed, then asked, "Do you mind carrying the baby?  I can make it if I can hang onto the railing."

It was slow going up the carpeted stairs, but Emeline managed well, leading the way to the bedroom she shared with her husband.  It was dominated by a fancily-carved cherry wood four-poster bed and a matching wardrobe, and near the bed was a cradle and rocking chair.

"We purchased that in San Francisco," Emeline explained with a smile, then sighed.  "I'd never imagined I'd be living in a place so grand...I was always happy for a simple farmhouse, but the Good Lord saw fit to bless me."  After the pain of losing her husband and children.

Opening the drawers at the bottom of the wardrobe, she pulled out two linen night-dresses and held one to Bonnie.  "One for you and one for me.  I'll get cleaned up and changed really quick," she added as she disappeared behind a folding partition screen that was painted in a Chinese motif.

Meanwhile, Barnabas went out to the bunkhouse in search of Pythias, and that was where the man was found, with a host of his riders waiting for word of the child's birth. The Deputy was grinning from ear to ear as he entered the room,

"Boys, We're welcoming my son, Wheeler Pike who's upstair with his mother gettin' acquainted." He explained enthusiastically. "Now if you boys promise not to burn the place down, ol' Pythias here'll be brinin' out the 'who hit John.' He'll up to the house fixin' supper for us, that is if he's willing."

"Yes, sir I kin do jest that an' then some for you folks. I take it the lady what Gibbs brought up to help out'd be stayin' the night?" Pythias Modeen inquired as the boys bega their whooping and hollering over the boys birth.

"She is so grub for three, and you boys save some fer the men out with the herd." Pike responded, then he added, "Cookie, steaks for these boys an' whatever else you wanna feed 'em."

"Yes sir That can be done an' noa worry none, there'\ll be hot steaks and grub fer them that's out with the herd," Nate replied. Danny just stood there smiling. A newborn boy, he was excited.

"Good enough, Pythias? Let's get to it, got a couple hungry women to get fed, they've themselves a busy day." Pike said as he started for the door.

Bonnie looked at the crib and was pleased that the baby would have a nice warm bed to lie in.  In fact, she was impressed by the whole room, especially the grand four-poster bed.  From where she was standing she could see that a lot of hard work had gone into making it.

After placing the baby in the crib, she turned to Em, who had made it successfully upstairs and was now rummaging through a drawer.

Opening the drawers at the bottom of the wardrobe, she pulled out two linen night-dresses and held one to Bonnie. "One for you and one for me. I'll get cleaned up and changed really quick," she added as she disappeared behind a folding partition screen that was painted in a Chinese motif.

Bonnie looked at the night-dress she had been handed. It was well-made and felt like it would be warm to wear.  However, she wondered if she could borrow a dressing gown as well.  The answer would be probably yes but she felt it would be wrong to assume it without asking first.  However, that was the least of her concerns.  The stairs would have been taxing and her patient should get to bed as soon as possible.

"When you're ready, we'll get you settled in for the night to get some rest while you can.  Your son will be wanting another feed in a few hours."

She looked around the room again and noted what was in it.  Since she couldn't see inside the wardrobe or drawers, she had to asked, "I'm guessing that you have everything ready like diapers.  Do you have some in here?"

Mr. Pike's announcement brought a round of cheers and back-slapping from the men in the bunkhouse, as well as a collective sigh of relief.  Even the gruff men knew that childbirth had its dangers, to both baby and mother, so much could go wrong, so it was great news that all had gone well.

And for Justus, it was great news that it was a boy, and he'd get a share of the pot that had been wagered on the baby's gender!

"Will ye be needin' me ta take th' nurse back ta town, sir?" he asked.  At least this time she could ride properly in the wagon, although it was raining again and getting dark, so he wasn't looking forward to going out again.

"You're right," Emeline commented with a weary grin as she emerged from the screen, looking refreshed now that she was cleaned up and in a fresh frock.  "It will be a very long time before I get any decent sleep again!"

Laughing, she walked over to the cradle and reached down to caress her son's soft hair.  "It's worth the fuss.  Hopefully, he'll..."

Shaking her head, she looked over at Bonnie.  "Oh, you should take my robe, too."  It wouldn't do for the young woman to be seen by Barnabas in just a night dress, and even a robe could be considered risque!  "Really, look in the wardrobe and use whatever will make you comfortable."

For all the grandeur of the house, most of Emeline's wardrobe was practical, suited to work around the ranch and in the cafe.

"'Fraid not, the lady is staying the night. This danged weather just don't seem to want to let up." Pike replied. "You done real good gettin' help for the brithin' an' all. I'll not forget that Gibss, we appreciate it." It was sincere, Barnabas was just not real sure what he would have done had Bonnie Campbell been there to help with the birthing. Buty like everything else in life, he learned from it.

"So how the wagerin' go? You a winner in that?" He asked with a grin.

"'Fraid not, the lady is staying the night. This danged weather just don't seem to want to let up."

"Best plan," Justus agreed, not only was the weather bad and the hour getting late, but it was probably a good idea to have someone here who knew what they were doing on this first night.  "Glad I don't hafta be out in th' rain and th' dark."

"You done real good gettin' help for the brithin' an' all. I'll not forget that Gibss, we appreciate it."

"Thank ya, sir."  Giving the man a nod, Justus let out a sigh of relief.  "Was glad I come across a nurse after I found out th' doc wasn't in town.  Had me worried, it did.  Glad th' Mrs. is all right, an' th' boy, too!"  It was funny, but even though the Pikes weren't direct family, having the baby here made the place seem more like a home.

"So how the wagerin' go? You a winner in that?" He asked with a grin.

"Yes, sir, I'm on th' winnin' side!"  Justus grinned widely, then added, "So I reckon next time I'll wager on a little gal, keep things even!"
