A visit to the theatre

Alice was watching two things intently, the production and her husband, wondering just what the man was thinking. She did not think him the prude, hardly, but she could almost see the wheels turning, waiting to be called to shut the theater down

Speed sat taking in the production wondering about the reaction of say the Reverend Gideon Evans, or The Ladies of Kalispell for that matter. Which should be quite visible as things progressed. And, perchance if Pastor Evans made no move to halt the production, the Ladies of Kalispell would certainly want that to happen, or perhaps they wanted to see the entire production before dispensing their wrath.

"I just know there'll be an explosion from the Pastor or the ladies or both, but it seems that they may be waiting to see the entire play before lowering the boom on this thing," He said as he leaned closer to her. "A bit risque for Kalispell IO would think, but then again, maybe not."

"I would never have thought that the costuming would be so lacking for a play here in town." She replied also in a low voice. While she could see that several other patrons were also whispering to one another, it was hard to tell if it was positive or negative. "This is actually not that bad, I mean, even though Arabella is having the time of her life, the play is quite good,"

"So what is your opinion on it the, I'm curious. Do you approve or disapprove?" she now inquired.

"Oh, um..."  Justus' cheeks were still burning as he shook his head.  "Don't seem proper," he whispered, "even if it's just play-pretendin'."

But then things got a little more tame, and he managed to relax a little and was actually enjoying the parts that he remembered from the times he'd been in church.

Later there were other outfits but no more nudity. However there was a musical number and quite well done too. Constance leaned in to Justus and whispered, "Feel free to join in on the chorus."

"Oh, no, ya don't want me doin' that!"  Not that he knew many songs in the first place, but he only much sang, quietly, sometimes, when he was alone with the cows, and even then, he suspected Mule didn't appreciate it!  "But you go right ahead, I'd like ta hear yer singin'."

Ben stood at the side of the stage, shaking his head at the display he had just seen.  All throughout rehearsals, Arabella had been fully clothed or at least wearing a thick body stocking with no indication of doing anything else.  Even Astin had been more modestly dressed.  He had no doubt that Arabella was behind this last minute change and if shock was the prime objective then she had well and truly achieved it.

Whatever the reason, tonight would be the only time she would get away with this.  He had no intention of seeing his theatre temporarily closed over this and he was willing to bet that Eve Hardy wasn't about to let her company get banned from Kalispell.  While he wasn't prudish, there was time and place for everything and this wasn't it.

Although he wasn't angry, he also found it interesting to see the reactions of the so-called genteel town folks.  Sure, this stunt would bring in the customers but there was a limit and when it affected his ability to make money that was it.

For now, there was nothing he could do about it and he stepped back a bit further from the stage.  As he did he heard or caught something in the corner of his eye (if you were to ask him later on, he still couldn't tell you which one it was) that caused him to look up.  There he saw two boys sitting in the rafters getting more education in one night than they would in a year of schooling.

He couldn't tell who they were but after the play was over and they came down, he would be waiting for them.

Oh, um..." Justus' cheeks were still burning as he shook his head. "Don't seem proper," he whispered, "even if it's just play-pretendin'."

"I suppose it isn't," Constance conceded, mindful to keep her own opinion now to herself.

They settled in to continue to watch and listen, the show was much less...revealing after that. Constance still figured it was not all that accurate a take on the Bible though but overall she was enjoying it. When there was a musical number she teased Justus he could join in.

"Oh, no, ya don't want me doin' that!" he was having none of it,  "But you go right ahead, I'd like ta hear yer singin'."

"I don't know the words to this one and I'm a decent singer at best....on a good day...in the proper mood," she informed him, "I am quite content to just listen now."

Pike was half leaning toward Em, his arm casually across the back of her chair. Now, he had seen some shows in his day when he lived in Virginia City Nevada at Piper's Opera House, but they had been nothing compared to this production. The biggest names of the day performed there, some he was lucky enough to have seen, still, this was quite the experience.

"Reckon you could do a better job of actin' than that." He all but whispered. "Now I don't mean you bein' up there without no clothes. Not hardly. I mean about the pretend part without the display of skin." He was already regretting what he said to his wife, but it was true, he was thinking she could do a better job of it.

"Didn't mean no offense, Love." He apologized, a fool thing to have said in place of his opinion that the show wasn't all that good.

Phin was still making notes about what he was seeing. He had never said anything about being a theater critic, but as enjoyable as it might be for some, the use of actual nudity as a shock factor, or whatever their excuse was for it.

The performance was not bad, it could be better, or so he thought. Iy seemed that they gave up on the nakedness, and that was good, though if there was damage to be done, they had already done it.

He did enjoy the opening scene, with Edward Darling as Satan. That had been really well done, but then the man was a thespian and therefore quite capable of delivering his lines forcefully. Arabella was not all that bad, he had to admit once she began to take the part a bit more seriously.

He wondered how the Ladies of Kalispell felt about the production.

As he took his bow, Edward Darling was furious!

The overacting, exhibitionist little baggage had upstaged him again!

Miss Hardy, the star of the show, had received massive applause, of course; he himself had engendered an adequate amount of clapping and cheering and, importantly, as the villain of the piece, a satisfying amount of booing. The stolid Astin came next and then... her. Wearing a hastily thrown-on dressing gown to modestly cover her revealing Salome outfit, she curtsied to the clapping, cheering, booing, cat calls, you name it, that greeted her final walk onto the stage. Arabella lapped it up - it might not have been entirely positive... but it was attention, and plenty of it.

Darling's cat-like eyes darted to a figure at the side of the audience: one of her minions, handing a letter to Mr McVey, Editor of the local newspaper. He didn't know its contents, but he could guess.

To My Dear Fellow Kalispellians, A Letter of Apology

I have asked the Editor of our esteemed local newspaper, Mr Phineas McVey, to print this letter as the quickest and surest way to offer my sincere and abject apologies for a terrible mistake that I made last night on the stage of our wonderful theatre, The White Rose. In a fit of religious zeal, believing it to be the truest and most authentic way to represent the venerated figure of Mother Eve in the Garden of Eden, your foolish correspondent decided, against all the dictates of prudence and good taste, to appear completely and utterly unclad, without even a fig leaf to obscure those things which must never be mentioned, let alone displayed, in polite society, upon the stage before an audience of shocked and horrified citizens of our town.

Please believe me when I say, hand on heart, that it was not my intention to cause the distress and shock that my precipitate actions have engendered. I must also apologise for any unclean thoughts that I may have inadvertently caused any of the otherwise clean minded and sober gentlemen who happened to be sitting in the front rows, where the scenery was less than successful than I had planned, at covering my nudity.

You will be pleased to hear that I have already been very severely spoken to by both the management and my fellow thespians upon this matter, and await to hear what chastisement or punishment may ensue. It is my intention to make amends for the harm that I have caused by my silly and immature behavior, and if any readers have any ideas about how I can best make amends, please forward them to the editor of this newspaper or privately to Miss A.S. Mudd, c/o the Belle-St. Regis Hotel, Main St. Kalispell, where I will give them my fullest consideration.

For those dear readers who were not in the audience, but for good moral reasons wish to judge for them selves the extent of my folly, photographic Tableaux prints are available on application from the usual establishments, $2 each or the complete set of three for just $5, all proceeds to charity.

Let me end, dear forgiving reader, by encouraging you all to attend the Excelsior Player's next performance, which will be our tasteful and highly moral production of The Old Curiosity Shop by Mr. Charles Dickens, and to assure you that my costuming for that production will be inspected, approved and sanctioned by the Theatre Management before the opening night.

Your sincere and penitent friend,

                                                      Arabella S. Mudd, Miss.

As he watched one of Arabella's minions come to the front and present her with the same old big bunch of silk flowers that she had presented to herself every night, Darling swore he would have his revenge on the little upstart.

Well, it would be a stretch to say she enjoyed the play but it certainly was not boring at least, this was the first theatre performance she'd ever been to and was quite certain Jacob was in that same boat.  Their take on the Bible was haphazard in the extreme. Hopefully the minister wasn't in the seats, he'd have an attack of apoplexy. Especially the nudity, which more amused Clara than upset her. That was all Arabella's doing, she was certain of it. Typical Arabella.

And then it was finished and the cast came out for their bows.  The applause (and lack of or even boos) was mixed. Clara applauded because she was supportive of her odd young friend. As for the tickets, money well spent? Debatable but then she was glad she had not missed it if for no other reason she would know for herself what the town would certainly be talking about for the next week. Thankfully Wyatt hadn't see this though.

She turned to her beloved husband, "Now, that was not so bad was it? Not the torture you thought it would be?"

Wyatt wanted to applaud, up from his lofty place above the cast but that would give away their hiding place. Or maybe not, the crowd was making plenty of their own noise. Wow, some were booing? It wasn't that bad, especially the first parts. Both he and Weedy had gotten eyes full alright of Miss Mudd, not that he ever called her that. She was Arabella, the strange girl who they had first met when she stayed in their house to be nursed back to health by Clara. He'd even helped. Sorta...

They couldn't leave yet though until the crowd itself had cleared the theatre, then he and Weedy would go sneak down and out that window, scot free and with quite an adventure to discuss.

Though the old bat she was seated next to on her right plainly had not enjoyed it, Caroline found herself thoroughly entertained. There had even been a musical number, she loved that.  She hoped Brendan, seated on her left, felt the same but no matter, to each their own. Good for Arabella for stirring up some controversy. When it was over and time to acknowledge the cast, Caroline stood up and clapped loudly.

There were some boos too even as she herself shouted out,  "Bravo! Bravo!"       She'd heard once that's what theatre patrons yelled so why not then.

Then it was time to leave, she turned to Brendan, "I liked it, how 'bout you?"
