"It might serve you better not to eat a great deal with the laudanum you've ingested," Angie said matter of factly, "That means that the pain medicine which was administered was thrown up, and it cannot help with the discomfort." It seemed the young woman did not quite understand that.
She realized that there was likely nothing that could be done about that, as the girl just didn't get it. Not unusual, rural folks sometimes had trouble understanding how things worked, like medicines. Laudanum would be particularly dangerous if she overdosed on it. "We'll take precautions with the laudanum."
"The Human..." People could be so cruel, but then, Emeline supposed, that the circus had at least provided some sort of support for the twins, and if she was to be honest with herself, Clem did kinda look like...
Big Sis declared that she was going to be sick, and Emeline was quick to grab a porcelain basin as Dr. Laurant chastised her softly.

"It's my fault, I'm afraid," Emeline admitted. She should have known better than to give cookies to someone so recently injured, and who hadn't eaten for hours.
"We'll take precautions with the laudanum."
"And the food." Emeline gently stroked Sis' back, ready to hold her hair if...when the puking commenced!

Unusually, just the one vomiting session seemed to clear Cicely out nicely, and the girl slumped gratefully back on the pillows after having some of the aftermath wiped from her chin and being given some water to rinse out her mouth.
The exercise seemed to have taken the wind out of her again and the plump giantess soon fell into a fitful slumber as her outsize body started the healing process on her wounded shoulder.

"The laudanum and food do not always mix; throw in the blood loss and the shock of the wound, and that all contributes to the system being a bit haywire, which means being sick to one's stomach. Doesn't happen to everyone, but yes, it does happen to a good many, and to ladies especially. Can't say why, but a fair number of men would have reacted the same way." Angie explained, "And don't feel bad, you were just being nice, and we tend to offer food right off when we can, or it's available."
"I would think that she would get through the queeziness fairly soon, and the discomfort of the wound to short order. There will be pain for a while as it heals on the inside." She continued. Thinking she might be the better one to ask questions of the woman, she plunged ahead. "So, Sis, what are we going to do with you? Do you have people around here? Folks, relations, some friends? Somewhere that you can stay in the next day or so when you leave here?" As far as that was concerned, she doubted that the girl had known anyone in this neck of the woods other than Tom Love and his men, besides her brother.
Angie looked down again only to find the girl fast asleep once more.

"I should have known," Emeline admitted, "I've heard about laudanum but never worked with it." She glanced at the sleeping figure on the bed as Angie asked about what they were going to do with her, but that wasn't up to her. Barnabas, as a lawman, not to mention the father and husband of the ones the woman and her brother had tried to kill, would know best what the outcome would be.
For herself, Emeline wasn't sure she was ready yet to forgive Sis, although she knew that was what God asked of her. She still needed time.
And for a fleeting moment, she thought to offer to stay with Big Sis so Angie could go down and have supper, but that was something else she wasn't ready for yet. In fact, more than anything that had happened back in the woods, what bothered her most were the uncharitable feelings she was having.
"One of the men can sit with her if you'd like to come down and join us for supper." That was easy for her to offer, and if anything happened, Angie would only be downstairs.

As Em and Angie were talking, there came a knock on the bedroom door. The door opened, and a head poked in. "Just me, ma'am, Mister Pike sent me back up so's you two could come on down fer supper." Dixie Brick said, hat in hand. "I'll sit with her long as ya like. Already et with the boys. so take yer time." The cowhand smiled at the two ladies.
"anythin' I need ta know? I mean I'll come on down should this un wake up. Ya know, Larado, Will, an' Zane 'er out follerin' tracks of them others, so we'll know what's what soon enough." Dixie informed them. "The boss didn't send 'em, they went of their own. Not to worry, them three are plumb zavy!
"Oh, thank you, Dixie." Emeline gave the man a smile and a nod, then looked at Angie. "See, now, good timing! This is Dixie Brick. Dixie, this is Dr. Laurant." The men had seen the doctor, but Emeline wasn't sure that there had been any formal introductions. "She'll be working at the hospital with Drs. Boone and Danforth."
Her grin widened. "Thank you for coming up to help, I'll be sure you get some extra cookies!" She gave the cowhand a playful wink.

"Ma'am, uh, Doctor. A pleasure. Be good have three Doc's in town, not that we got a real need, but there's times folks git sick, others hurt, an' birthin's. I figger you'll stay right busy." Dixie said, not quite sure what to say, as he'd never seen a female doctor before, nor a woman lawyer but he'd heard there was one time to time in town.
"Extree cookies? That'll be swell, like I said, you take your time, Miz Pike, I ain't in no hurry." He added, "?Oh an Pythias, he's about got that marker done and two 'er three of the boy's are goin/ out with him to bury that feller. Jest so's you'd know."
"Thank you." Emeline smiled and lightly touched Dixie's arm as she led the way downstairs. "This really has become a family here," she commented, "everyone works together, and we all help each other." She chuckled. "There are a few characters, but it all works together."
As they entered the kitchen, she gave Barnabas a hug. "We're ready for supper," she declared, "what did you make us?" She was teasing, of course, there was the stew that Cookie had sent over, and she knew it was going to be great!

"Characters can make any job easier, and sometimes all that much more enjoyable," Angie said with a smile, knowing that could go both ways. "This is a beautiful house you have here, and that waterfall, magnificent! This had to be a rare find!"

"Son of a Gun Stew, old family recipe passed down fer years, like, more'n I can remember" Barnabas lied. "Real good, if I don't say so myself. Have a seat ladies while I dish 'er up for ya."
"IF Nate here was was hs granny!" Pythias said, "That slab's ready Ma'am. Just plain, man's name an' the date. Got a couple o' the boys to ride up and put him ta rest. Least we can do, considerin'. An' the girl? How's she lookin'?"
"Fine. Just fine," Angie spoke up quickly. "She'll survive, that's for sure. But, I'm sure you know about gunshots, one inch one way or the other, fortunate, under all the pressure. It would have been better if it was a miss."
