Born: 1840, Port Arthur, Tx.
Childhood spent up and down the coast, his Father being in the merchant shipping business, carrying Cotton to European markets. Given a decent Education while his father was at sea.
1861: Finds himself in Savannah Georgia when the war breaks out and joins the Georgia Militia
1861- April 1862: Siege of Fort Pulaski until its surrender
April - May 1863: Prisoner of War until escape from the Old Capitol Prison
June 1863 - July 1864: 12th Georgia Artillery Battalion until wounded at the Battle for Atlanta 22nd July 1864
Recovers at Port Arthur. 1866 - heads west to work on the The Kansas Pacific Railroad at Manhattan, Kansas, where westward progress stalled while a bridge was built across the Big Blue River.
1867 - 1875 : 8 years of working hard, going everywhere and getting nowhere.
October 1876: Kalispell, Montana Territory: throws up a job as a carpenter to try his hand at barbering.
