After studying at Harvard for one year, Adam was appointed to the staff of Major-General Henry Halleck (thanks to family connections) at the start of the Civil War. Halleck was the General-in-Chief of the U.S. Army and Adam served as a clerk and messenger. His duties as a messenger frequently took him to the battlefield and so he learned the skills needed to defend himself and to fight.
After Halleck is made Chief-of-Staff of the U.S. Army in 1864 he sees the potential Adam displays as a promising lawyer and so he sponsors the younger man's appointment to Columbia Law School.

Studies at Columbia Law School.
June 1867 - September 1876
Practices law in various towns and eventually ends up in Helena, Montana. Governor Samuel Houser, impressed by Adam's skills and prowess appoints him as Civil/County Court Judge for Flathead County based in Kalispell.

Flathead County Judge presiding in civil, county and territorial matters. He is also the County Coroner.

Born and raised in Hampton, New York. After finishing high school in 1860, he works as a clerk for a local lawyer for over a year.
