When William returns in early 1860, Mark is engaged to Lucy Everett. Lucy becomes enthralled with William and she succumbs to his charms, marrying him unexpectedly. Mark becomes resentful of his half-brother but when Lucy becomes more and more erratic, Mark begins to think that William might have something to do with it. As he is unable to prove anything, all he can do is watch Lucy's demise and eventual incarceration.
When the civil war begins and shortly after William leaves, Mark joins the Union army.1861 - 1865
During the war, Mark fights for the north. Obtains the rank of Captain by the end of the war. He encounters his brother, William, twice during this period and learns that his brother never joined the army. He also notices on both occasions, William in the company of various women of means.
