- Timeline
1840 - 1861
Second son born to Harold and Millicent Harper in St. Louis. For the first 12 years or so of his life, he is close to his brother William. However, when his mother sees the trajectory of William's life and unable to break the hold Reginald Knight has on her husband and oldest son, Millicent convinces her husband to send Mark to a military school back east. Mark returns home every summer but the bond between him and his brother gradually gets weaker. As he grows older, his disapproval of his brother's activities (i.e. the ones he knows of) becomes more evident. The contact with William becomes more sporadic when he goes off on his own.
At the end of his military schooling, Mark joins the army.
1861 - 1865
During the war, Mark fights for the north. Obtains the rank of Captain by the end of the war. He encounters his brother, William, twice during this period.
1865 - Early 1875
Leaves the army and gets a job as a Deputy Marshal in Stevensville, Montana. In 1870, he gets the job as town Marshall in Missoula where he serves until early 1874. During this time he meets Governor Samuel Houser who later offers him a job as a troubleshooter, which Mark accepts.
Early 1875 - June 1877
Works as a troubleshooter for Governor Houser going to various towns and counties in Montana to solve any problems that requires the Territorial Government to step in.
Mid June 1977
After seeing an edition of the Kalispell Union newspaper with an article about murders in the town, he decides to go to Kalispell to check it out unaware that his brother has been living there for some time.
