December 1845 - May 1864
Childhood living and going to school in Washington D.C. However, instead of going to Yale like his father wanted, he instead enlists in the Union Army the day after he graduates from high school due to his long-held belief that he should be out there supporting and fighting for his country.
May 1864 - July 1865
Spends the Civil War fighting with various companies and eventually rises to the rank of sergeant. He leaves the army at the end of July 1864 and heads out west to find his fortune.
August 1865 - January 1870
Travels to various places trying to find out what he wants to do and decides that being a ranch hand is it.
January 1870 - August 1875
Ends up in a ranch outside North Platte, Nebraska where he learns to become a ranch hand. When his brother Charlie turns up, Sam is supportive and knows that when their father finds out it won't be good. Wanting to protect Charlie (and in a way himself), they both head off to join their brother Mike with the belief that there is safety in numbers.
