January 1840 - September 1858
Born the eldest of five children to Charles and Rebecca Wentworth. His father worked as aide to a number of senators and was considered an important man to know if you want to get ahead in Washington. His childhood was uneventful. Matt's father wanted him to go to Yale to become a lawyer and as dutiful son he did so.
September 1858 - May 1861
Attends Yale Law School (does not graduate in an act of defiance against his father). He knew after the first semester of law school that it was not what he wanted to do. After living a secluded life in Washington, college had opened his eyes to other possibilities. He tries on numerous occasions to convince his father to let him travel so that he could work out what he wanted from life but his father is adamant that he stay in school.
May 1861 - August 1865
Seeing an opportunity to get out and see the world, he leaves school to join the US (Union) Army to fight in The Civil War. Due to his college education, he becomes a junior Lieutenant and later a Captain. It was also during this time that he starts to develop an interest in investing and buying land and hotels.
September 1863 - April 1865
Marries Louisa, who is eventually killed by the wife of one of her lovers. The marriage was over long before the time of her death, which occurs while he is at the Battle of Appomattox Station.
August 1865
Joins the newly formed Secret Service (Treasury Department) in combating counterfeit U.S. currency. Later, he became involves in investigating federal crimes. He now uses his business interests as means of gaining access to those who have come under suspicion in order to gather evidence to convict them.
Present 1875
Has been sent to Kalispell to keep a watch (as well as being a contact for other operatives that may be in the area) and gather any evidence to convict those who may be behind a number of suspicious activities in the area over the last few years. Buying the hotel presented a golden opportunity to get into the town and the community.
