Spends his childhood living and going to school in Washington D.C.  Idolises his brothers and their adventures during the Civil War and the following years.  He is father's last hope of having a son become a lawyer and to enter politics.  Is sent to study law at Yale.

September 1873 - August 1875

Studies law at Yale but dreams of joining up with his brothers.  Eventually, gets the courage and instead of going back to college, heads outs west before his father finds out.  Gets on the train and goes to North Platte, Nebraska, where his brother Sam lives and works.  Both of them decide to go and join up with older brother, Mike in Medicine Bow, Wyoming.

September 1875

Arrives in Kalispell and gets a job as a trainee ranch hand at Lost Lake Ranch.

June/July 1876

Becomes a deputy in Kalispell
